Praised by its century old houses and rustic brick pavements, Vigan City was voted as one the New Seven Wonder Cities (N7WC) of the world yesterday around 3 a.m.. The formal announcement was made by Bernard Weber, Founder & President of New7Wonders in Dubai, UAE via Youtube.
The New7Wonders Cities campaign started in 2012 and received nomination of more than 1,200 cities from 220 different countries. The whole voting process took more than 20 months to complete. While only later this year it was narrowed down to 21 nominees in July, and later trimmed down to 14 finalists in October, until the seven cities were announced as the “New 7 Wonders Cities” this month.
Joining Vigan City in the New7Wonders Cities list are the following:
- Beirut, Lebanon
- Doha, Qatar
- Durban, South Africa
- Havana, Cuba
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
- La Paz, Bolivia
Some Philippine cities like Iloilo City and Cebu City was also shortlisted on the process; but it was Vigan City who made it on the top 27. This all the more inspired the whole province of Ilocos Sur to campaign for votes for Vigan City through N7WC’s website, applications, postcards and text messages.
